On 29 September 2026, the EU-funded GENIAL project was proud to participate as an exhibitor at “5 Years EU Cancer Mission: Stronger Through Connection” in Brussels, an important European Commission event marking five years of the EU Cancer Mission and looking ahead towards its 2030 objectives. The event brought together researchers, clinicians, policymakers, patients, innovators, funders and industry representatives from across Europe’s cancer community.
Representing the GENIAL consortium, Clélia Galvanin from ULB and Veronika Všetičkova from ELPA presented the project and used the opportunity to connect with other European projects, exchange experiences and identify new stakeholders and potential collaborations. The discussions provided valuable opportunities to consider how GENIAL can further strengthen its impact, dissemination and exploitation activities, while also establishing connections that can contribute to the long-term sustainability of the project and its results.
The programme on the first day provided a particularly relevant setting for these exchanges. Following the opening session, “Halfway to 2030: Advancing the EU Cancer Mission,” the programme addressed the importance of understanding cancer and improving data exchange across Europe. Discussions explored the development of a more coherent European cancer data ecosystem, better access to and sharing of cancer data, and the potential of data-driven approaches to support research, innovation and more personalised cancer care. Parallel discussions also addressed areas such as National Cancer Data Nodes, cancer imaging data and artificial intelligence.
For GENIAL, participation in these sessions provided an important opportunity to reflect on the project’s own activities within the wider European cancer research landscape. At the same time, the dedicated project showcase and networking opportunities allowed the consortium to meet other EU-funded initiatives, exchange ideas and experiences, identify potential synergies and brainstorm possibilities for future cooperation.
Beyond presenting GENIAL, the event was therefore an important opportunity to listen, learn and connect – exploring how the project’s work can contribute to the broader objectives of the EU Cancer Mission and how collaboration with other initiatives can help maximise its impact beyond the project’s lifetime.
A big thank you to the European Commission and all the organisers for creating such a valuable space where European projects can showcase their work, learn from each other and build new connections. Events like this demonstrate the importance of bringing the European cancer research and policy community together and ensuring that the knowledge generated by individual projects contributes to a stronger, more connected and sustainable European effort to improve cancer prevention, research and care.
