for patients

The GENIAL project is a truly patient-centric initiative that recognises the urgent need to improve awareness, prevention and early detection of liver diseases and liver cancer. Despite the rapidly growing burden of liver disease across Europe, many liver conditions still remain silent for years, while public awareness and political attention remain far too low. This is why projects such as GENIAL are so important for the patient community — they bring together science, innovation and patient voices to create more effective and personalised approaches to liver health.

The GENIAL project is highly important for the liver community because it aims to improve understanding of liver disease progression and liver cancer risk through advanced research, innovation and multidisciplinary collaboration. By combining expertise in hepatology, genomics, artificial intelligence and patient advocacy, the project has the potential to support earlier diagnosis, better prevention strategies and improved outcomes for people living with liver diseases.

The GENIAL project is a European research initiative focused on understanding how genetic and environmental factors interact in the development of alcohol-related liver cancer, also known as hepatocellular carcinoma (ALD-HCC). The project brings together leading experts in hepatology, artificial intelligence, genomics, imaging and patient advocacy to improve prevention, early diagnosis and future treatment options for liver cancer.

One of the major goals of GENIAL is to identify why some people with liver disease are at much higher risk of developing liver cancer than others. Researchers are studying the role of genetics, lifestyle, environmental exposures and metabolic changes in the liver, while also using advanced technologies such as AI, imaging and multi-omics analysis to detect cancer at much earlier stages.

This is extremely important for the patient community because liver cancer is often diagnosed too late, when treatment options are limited and survival rates are poor. Early stages of liver disease and liver cancer can remain silent for years without symptoms. GENIAL aims to change this by developing better screening tools, more accurate risk prediction models and earlier detection methods that could allow patients to receive treatment before the disease becomes advanced.

The project is also highly valuable because it is patient-centred. Patient organisations such as the European Liver Patients’ Association (ELPA) help ensure that the research remains connected to the real needs and experiences of people living with liver disease. Patients are not simply observers in the project — their perspectives help shape communication, awareness activities and the future implementation of research outcomes.

For the patient community, GENIAL represents hope for:

  • earlier diagnosis of liver cancer,
  • improved prevention strategies,
  • more personalised care,
  • better understanding of risk factors,
  • reduced stigma around liver disease,
  • and ultimately better survival and quality of life.

By combining science, technology and patient involvement, GENIAL has the potential to significantly improve liver health across Europe and create more effective pathways for prevention and care.

ELPA strongly believes that patient involvement is not an optional addition to research projects, but an essential component of successful and impactful healthcare innovation. We are therefore extremely proud to be part of the GENIAL consortium and to help ensure that the patient perspective remains at the heart of the project throughout its entire journey.
